What is an empty hour in my chair worth?

What Is One Empty Hour Costing Me?

An open hour is not a loss — it is unused capacity. This puts a number on it so a gap in the book becomes a decision instead of a feeling.

Potential, not guaranteed revenue

Under these assumptions each booked hour returns $60.00, and 10.0 bookable hours a week sit empty — $600 a week of POTENTIAL UNUSED CAPACITY. It only becomes revenue if the demand exists and the slot fills.

HOW THIS CALCULATION WORKS

There are two hourly rates in a barber's week. The one you earn while someone is in the chair, and the one you actually average across every hour the doors are open. The gap between them is unused capacity, and it is the cheapest money in the business because the rent is already paid.

  • Booked hours = clients per week × service minutes ÷ 60
  • Revenue per booked hour = weekly revenue ÷ booked hours
  • Empty hours = bookable hours − booked hours
  • Potential unused capacity = empty hours × revenue per booked hour

A WORKED EXAMPLE

40 clients a week at $45, 40 bookable hours, 45 minutes a service: 30 hours booked, $60 per booked hour, 10 empty hours — $600 a week of potential unused capacity.

QUESTIONS BARBERS ASK

Is an empty hour lost revenue?

No, and ChairScale will not call it that. It is potential unused capacity: what the hour would return at your current rate if someone booked it. Whether it converts depends on demand.

Should I cut hours or fill them?

Both are valid. Filling the hour adds revenue; cutting it raises your average rate per hour open and gives you the time back. Model the shorter week with the work fewer days calculator.

What counts as a bookable hour?

Hours you are open and able to take a client. Admin time, lunch and cleaning blocks should come out before you enter the number.
