HOW THIS CALCULATION WORKS

A chair does not earn by being open, it earns by being occupied. Utilization tells you which problem you have: low utilization means empty time to fill, high utilization means the only way up is a higher ticket.

  • Booked minutes = clients per week × minutes per service
  • Available minutes = hours open per day × 60 × days per week
  • Utilization = booked ÷ available

A WORKED EXAMPLE

40 clients a week at 45 minutes is 30 booked hours. Open 8 hours a day, 5 days a week is 40 hours available. That is 75% utilization and 10 hours of empty chair.

What counts as available time?

The hours you are in the shop and willing to take a client. Do not count hours you would never work — that flatters the number and hides nothing useful.

Should utilization be 100%?

No. A book with zero slack means no room for a walk-in, a running-late client or a break. Near-full utilization is a signal to raise price, not to squeeze the day.

Does cleanup time count?

Put it in your minutes per service if it happens every time. That is what makes the slot length real.
