HOW THIS CALCULATION WORKS

Income from a chair is three levers: what you charge, how many people sit in it, and how much of that leaves again as rent, product, card fees and tax. Most barbers can recite the first two and have never measured the third, which is why the yearly number in their head is usually the gross one.

  • Weekly clients = clients per day × days per week
  • Gross = weekly clients × price × weeks worked
  • Take-home = gross × (1 − expense share)

A WORKED EXAMPLE

At $40 a cut, 8 cuts a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year, the chair grosses $80,000. Keep 80% of that after booth rent, supplies and tax set-aside and you take home $64,000 — $1,280 a week.

What expense percentage should I use?

Whatever actually leaves your account: booth rent or your commission split, product, card processing and the money you set aside for tax. If you are not sure, run it twice — once optimistic, once pessimistic — and plan around the lower number.

Should I count tips?

Keep tips out of the price field. Price is what you control and what you can raise. Tips move with service and volume, and mixing them in makes a price decision look better than it is.
